The Church of San Matteo apostolo is the oldest and largest in the town. Located in the town center, in Piazza Pope John XXIII, it is open to worshippers and visitors every day. Adjacent to the church are the parish house and the oratory, which hosts the community’s pastoral activities.
Originally built by the Goths and dedicated to Saint Theodata, the church was rebuilt during the Norman period. Over the centuries, it underwent numerous restorations while always preserving its three naves. In 1860, it was the subject of significant renovation work. However, due to structural issues, it was completely demolished and rebuilt in 1937. While the three apses were reconstructed between 1937 and 1938, the entire project was completed in 1961 with the erection of the bell tower.
After its initial dedication to Saint Theodata, the church was successively consecrated to Saint John, Saint Zeno, and finally to Saint Matthew the Apostle, the town’s patron saint. His finely crafted silver bust, made in the Neapolitan school in 1748, is displayed in the right nave and is carried in procession every year on September 21. The church also houses the relic of Saint Zeno’s forearm, brought from Rome in 1529 by the priest Prospero Artese. During the eighteenth century, the church was enriched with other important artworks, such as the Baroque altar of the Blessed Sacrament, made of polychrome marble with inlays and bas-reliefs. In 1991, the Baroque altar was moved to the left nave to make room for a central altar. More recently, a majestic pipe organ was installed in the right nave, completed in 2015 by Catelli Organs of Atri and inaugurated in 2016 with a concert by the renowned musician Olivier Latry.

Chiesa di San Matteo Apostolo
La chiesa di San Matteo Apostolo è la più antica e grande del paese. Situata nel centro cittadino, in piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII, è aperta ai fedeli e ai visitatori tutti i giorni. Adiacenti alla chiesa si trovano i locali della canonica e l’oratorio, dedicato alle attività pastorali della comunità.
La chiesa, costruita originariamente dai Goti e dedicata a Santa Teodata, venne riedificata nel periodo normanno; ha subito nei secoli innumerevoli restauri, conservando sempre le tre navate. Nel 1860 fu oggetto di importanti interventi di ristrutturazione. A causa di problemi strutturali, tuttavia, nel 1937 venne abbattuta e ricostruita integralmente. Mentre le tre absidi furono riedificate già nel 1937-38, i lavori si conclusero nel 1961, con l’innalzamento del campanile.
Dopo l’iniziale intitolazione a Santa Teodata, nel corso dei secoli la chiesa venne consacrata a San Giovanni, a San Zenone e infine a San Matteo Apostolo, patrono del paese, il cui busto in argento di scuola napoletana (1748), di fattura molto pregevole, è esposto nella navata destra e viene portato in processione, ogni anno, il 21 settembre. Nella chiesa è presente inoltre la reliquia dell’avambraccio di San Zenone, portata da Roma nel 1529 dal sacerdote Prospero Artese. Nel corso del Settecento, la chiesa si arricchì di altre importanti opere d’arte, come l’altare barocco del Santissimo Sacramento, realizzato in marmi policromi con intarsi e bassorilievi. Nel 1991 l’altare barocco è stato spostato nella navata sinistra per lasciare spazio ad un altare centrale. Sulla navata destra, di recente, è stato realizzato un maestoso organo a canne, ultimato nel 2015 dalla Catelli organi di Atri e inaugurato nel 2016 con un concerto del celebre musicista Olivier Latry.
